Uttoxeter Canal - March update

I ended last month with mention of the mileposts that were being cast for us. I'm happy to report that these were completed and delivered to us just a few days ago. We will now be painting them and installation should happen over the coming months.

The final installation details have yet to be agreed, but we are working on this with Staffs County Council and other landowners. It looks likely that the first two to be installed will be numbers 25 and 26, near to the JCB factory in the next couple of months. We have had to relocate 25 as the original line of the canal goes right through the middle of the factory, so a new location has been agreed, beside one of the lakes, where walkers will be able to see it. Our intention is to create a trail from Uttoxeter to the Churnet Valley, along the original line where possible, but using safe alternative walking routes where this is not possible. Thanks to JCB and to those members and supporters who made this project possible through their sponsorship of the mileposts.

Our February work party cleared and burned more vegetation at the end of the path from Bridge 70 where it meets the railway between Crumpwood and Alton. We've made great progress in this area and we will continue in our work party this month, on Thursday, 8th March. As before the work will involve cutting up and moving tree branches and other vegetation, and burning these on a bonfire.

Please meet at 9.30am at Denstone Village Hall, College Rd, Denstone, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire ST14 5HR for a lift to site, or on site at 10am having made your own way on foot from Alton or Denstone. The site is a little over a mile from either village. All tools and equipment will be provided. Volunteers are advised to wear old clothes, stout shoes and to bring waterproofs in case of rain and a packed lunch if staying all day. It is helpful to know if you are intending to be there as I can then advise of any late changes of plan.

Best regards
Steve Wood
