Churnet Valley Masterplan
Staffs Moorlands District Council have today published on their website an overview of the Churnet Valley Masterplan, which is now under way. We are pleased to see that our aspirations to restore the Uttoxter Canal are specifically referred to in this overview.
The Trust has been interviewed by the consultant's undertaking tourism studies on behalf on SMDC, and has provided the consultants with detailed information about opportunities, issues and challenges relating to both the Caldon and the Uttoxeter Canals. The study embraces the inland waterway route from Rudyard Lake, including the canal feeder and the Leek arm, and the Caldon Canal tourism 'honeypots' of Denford, Cheddleton, Consall and Froghall, along with the route of the former Uttoxeter Canal.
The Trust's "Caldon Canal - Leek Arm: Canal Corridor Study to investigate the potential to restore, extend and develop the canal in Leek" is already being used by SMDC* and their consultants as they look further into what benefits and opportunities a new canal basin at Leek would offer as part of the potential development of Leek's Cornhill site for employment and leisure use.
We have also commented and attended a workshop relating to the Boltons Copperworks site in Froghall. This is a key site for both Froghall as a destination and of course our Uttoxeter Canal restoration plans.
A draft masterplan will be written for consultation between June and September, followed by final adoption between October and December.
* The Trust's "Caldon Canal - Leek Arm: Canal Corridor Study to investigate the potential to restore, extend and develop the canal in Leek" has already informed a Staffordshire County Council study that in turn recommended that SMDC should progress entering into a "collaboration agreement" with the largest landowner in the South Leek Cornhill Regeneration Area, in a bid to establish the feasibility of assembling all the required land.
